Overview
SS-31 (also known as Elamipretide and MTP-131) is a synthetic mitochondria-targeting tetrapeptide composed of four amino acids, including the modified residue 2′,6′-dimethyltyrosine. Its alternating cationic and aromatic structure allows the peptide to concentrate within the inner mitochondrial membrane, distinguishing it from peptides that act primarily at cell-surface receptors.
SS-31 has been studied for its selective association with cardiolipin, a phospholipid concentrated in the inner mitochondrial membrane that is closely involved in maintaining cristae architecture and the organization of the electron transport chain.
