Properties
Overview
Melanotan II (MT-2) is a synthetic cyclic heptapeptide analog of α-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (α-MSH). It belongs to the melanocortin peptide family and has been widely studied for its interaction with melanocortin receptors (MC-R), a group of receptors involved in pigmentation signaling, metabolic regulation, and central nervous system pathways.
In laboratory research environments, MT-2 has been examined as a non-selective agonist of several melanocortin receptor subtypes, particularly MC1R, MC3R, MC4R, and MC5R. These receptors are distributed throughout different tissues and biological systems, including melanocytes, the central nervous system, and endocrine signaling pathways.
Because of its receptor activity and structural stability, Melanotan II has become a frequently studied compound in experimental models investigating melanin production, neuroendocrine signaling, appetite regulation, and melanocortin receptor pathway dynamics.
Research Background
Scientific investigations have explored Melanotan II for its interaction with multiple melanocortin receptor subtypes, each associated with different physiological signaling systems.
Research involving the melanocortin-1 receptor (MC1R) has examined the peptide’s role in melanocyte signaling and melanin production pathways. Activation of MC1R in experimental models has been associated with increased synthesis of eumelanin, the pigment responsible for darker skin and hair coloration.
Studies have also investigated MT-2 in relation to central melanocortin receptors such as MC3R and MC4R, which are present in regions of the brain involved in metabolic regulation and neuroendocrine signaling. Experimental models have examined how activation of these receptors may influence appetite signaling, hormonal regulation, and behavioral pathways associated with melanocortin system activity.
Additional research has explored MT-2 in neurological and cellular models evaluating neuroprotective signaling and neuronal growth responses. Some studies have reported that melanocortin receptor activation may influence neurite outgrowth and neuronal survival mechanisms following experimental injury models.
Because Melanotan II interacts with several melanocortin receptor pathways simultaneously, it has been widely utilized in research investigating pigmentation signaling, neuroendocrine regulation, and melanocortin receptor system biology.
