Overview

Epithalon (also known as Epitalon and Epithalone) is a synthetic tetrapeptide composed of four amino acids, with the sequence alanine-glutamate-aspartate-glycine (Ala-Glu-Asp-Gly). It was modeled on the amino acid composition of epithalamin, a naturally occurring peptide complex originally isolated from the pineal gland.


Because of its structural relationship to a pineal-derived peptide, Epithalon has been widely examined in laboratory research investigating telomere biology, cellular aging pathways, and neuroendocrine signaling. Much of the scientific interest surrounding the peptide centers on its studied interaction with telomerase, an enzyme involved in the maintenance of telomeric DNA.


Due to its interactions with telomere-associated pathways and pineal signaling systems, Epithalon has become a frequently studied compound in research examining cellular senescence, circadian regulation, and gene expression.


Research Background

Scientific investigations have explored Epithalon across experimental models examining telomerase activity, pineal gland signaling, and age-related cellular processes.


Laboratory studies have examined the peptide’s potential influence on telomerase reverse transcriptase (hTERT), the catalytic component of the telomerase enzyme. In certain cell-culture models, researchers reported that exposure to Epithalon was associated with increased expression of telomerase components and elongation of telomeric DNA, processes commonly examined in studies of cellular replication and senescence.


Additional research has investigated Epithalon in relation to pineal gland function and melatonin signaling. Experimental models have explored whether the peptide may influence melatonin regulation and circadian gene expression, pathways associated with neuroendocrine rhythm and cellular timekeeping.


Studies have also examined the peptide’s potential interaction with oxidative stress pathways and gene expression regulation, where researchers monitored changes in antioxidant-related markers and transcriptional activity within controlled laboratory protocols.


Much of the foundational research on Epithalon originates from studies conducted at the St. Petersburg Institute of Bioregulation and Gerontology, where investigators examined the peptide within models of aging biology and neuroendocrine regulation. Because of its interactions with telomere maintenance and pineal signaling pathways, Epithalon continues to be studied as a model compound in research examining cellular aging, circadian regulation, and gene expression.
